How to Vote

This extraordinary election (that's the official name - it's not just because they knew I was running) for Como Ward will be conducted by post. If you live in the Como Ward (see map) or are registered to vote in the Ward you should receive your ballot paper at the address where you are registered to vote with the Electoral Commission in the week starting 6 February.

The ballot paper will have 4 names. My name is listed third. You need only put a tick against one name*. (You can use a number “1” or a cross, and you can number more than one box, but don't tick or cross more than one box. As long as your first / only preference is clear.)

You need to complete your ballot paper, seal it, sign it, and post it. If you are going near the City of South Perth offices on the corner of Sandgate Street and South Terrace in South Perth you can drop your vote into the reception area. Make sure you have signed the envelope your ballot is in.

Votes must be delivered by Friday 3 March, so best to vote and post as soon as you get the ballot paper.

It's a "first past the post" voting system so the candidate with the most ticks (or crosses. or number “1”s - as long as you are clear about who you have voted for) will be the winner. Preferences will not be distributed.

Here's a time line for the election from the Council website.

*LOCAL GOVERNMENT (ELECTIONS) REGULATIONS 1997 - REG 34

If only one office is to be filled at the election, an elector is to mark the ballot paper by placing a tick in the box opposite the name of the candidate whom the elector wishes to be elected.
